The Yass Valley Council area is located in south-eastern New South Wales. The Council area encompasses a total land area of about 4,000 square kilometres. The Yass Valley Council area is predominantly rural, with a township at Yass and villages at Binalong, Bookham, Bowning, Gundaroo, Murrumbateman, Sutton and Wee Jasper. Rural land is used largely for agriculture, particularly sheep grazing. Tourism and viticulture are also important industries.

Key employment sectors include agriculture forestry and fishing, accommodation and food services, retail trade, health care and social assistance, construction and education. The main agricultural industry is sheep grazing, with some cattle grazing, wheat growing and viticulture. The main retail area is the Yass Central Business District. Yass Valley features the Yass District Hospital and the Yass Campus of TAFE NSW Illawarra Institute.
