The Burwood Council area is located in the inner-western suburbs of Sydney. The Council area encompasses a total land area of about 7 square kilometres and is a predominantly residential area, with significant commercial land use.

Key employment sectors include retail, property & business services, health, and education. Burwood features two major shopping centres - the Burwood Town Centre and Westfield Burwood Shopping Centre, with a smaller centre at Burwood Plaza. The Council area has three private hospitals - Alwyn Rehabilitation Hospital, Strathfield Private Hospital and St John of God Hospital. Several training colleges (theological, missionary and nursing) are located in the area, with a number of private and public schools.
