Dominant groups

An analysis of the total exports by industry sectors in the Canberra Region in 2019/20 shows the three largest industries were:

  • Manufacturing (2,019 million or 24.6%)
  • Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (1,596 million or 19.4%)
  • Accommodation and Food Services (646 million or 7.9%)

In combination these three industries accounted for 4,261 million in total or 51.9% of the total exports by industry in the the Canberra Region.

In comparison, the same 3 industries in NSW accounted for 16.6% in Manufacturing; 3.1% in Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing and 2.8% in Accommodation and Food Services.

The major differences between the total exports by industries of the Canberra Region and NSW were:

  • A larger percentage of total exports by Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (19.4% compared to 3.1%)
  • A smaller percentage of total exports by Financial and Insurance Services (0.5% compared to 16.1%)
  • A larger percentage of total exports by Manufacturing (24.6% compared to 16.6%)
  • A smaller percentage of total exports by Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (2.6% compared to 9.7%)

The largest changes in the total exports by industries between 2014/15 and 2019/20 in the Canberra Region were for:

  • Mining (+$311 million)
  • Manufacturing (+$299 million)
  • Electricity, Gas, Water and Waste Services (+$129 million)
  • Other Services (+$98 million)
