In the Canberra Region, Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing had the largest total exports by industry, generating $2,315 million in 2022/23.

Exports by industry are sales of goods and services to non-resident households, businesses and other organisations, outside the Canberra Region boundaries. Exports (domestic) include all exports from the area to other parts of Australia. Exports (international) includes all exports from the Region to countries outside Australia.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the total exports by industry sectors in the Canberra Region in 2021/22 shows the three largest industries were:

  • Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (2,315 million or 23.8%)
  • Manufacturing (1,895 million or 19.5%)
  • Accommodation and Food Services (1,083 million or 11.1%)

In combination these three industries accounted for 5,293 million in total or 54.4% of the total exports by industry in the the Canberra Region.

In comparison, the same 3 industries in NSW accounted for 4.1% in Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing; 14.3% in Manufacturing and 2.4% in Accommodation and Food Services.

The major differences between the total exports by industries of the Canberra Region and NSW were:

  • A larger percentage of total exports by Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (23.8% compared to 4.1%)
  • A smaller percentage of total exports by Financial and Insurance Services (0.5% compared to 14.5%)
  • A larger percentage of total exports by Accommodation and Food Services (11.1% compared to 2.4%)
  • A smaller percentage of total exports by Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (1.8% compared to 10.0%)

The total total exports by industry in the Canberra Region $increased by 1,466 million between 2016/17 and 2022/23.

The largest changes in the total exports by industries between 2016/17 and 2022/23 in the Canberra Region were for:

  • Accommodation and Food Services (+$529 million)
  • Retail Trade (+$260 million)
  • Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (+$239 million)
  • Electricity, Gas, Water and Waste Services (+$193 million)
