In the Canberra Region, Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing had the largest total exports by industry, generating $2,154 million in 2021/22.

Exports by industry are sales of goods and services to non-resident households, businesses and other organisations, outside the Canberra Region boundaries. Exports (domestic) include all exports from the area to other parts of Australia. Exports (international) includes all exports from the Region to countries outside Australia.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the total exports by industry sectors in the Canberra Region in 2021/22 shows the three largest industries were:

  • Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (2,154 million or 27.1%)
  • Manufacturing (1,691 million or 21.3%)
  • Public Administration and Safety (570 million or 7.2%)

In combination these three industries accounted for 4,415 million in total or 55.6% of the total exports by industry in the the Canberra Region.

In comparison, the same 3 industries in NSW accounted for 4.9% in Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing; 15.1% in Manufacturing and 4.9% in Public Administration and Safety.

The major differences between the total exports by industries of the Canberra Region and NSW were:

  • A larger percentage of total exports by Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (27.1% compared to 4.9%)
  • A smaller percentage of total exports by Financial and Insurance Services (0.5% compared to 16.9%)
  • A smaller percentage of total exports by Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (2.4% compared to 10.8%)
  • A larger percentage of total exports by Manufacturing (21.3% compared to 15.1%)

The total total exports by industry in the Canberra Region $increased by 520 million between 2016/17 and 2021/22.

The largest changes in the total exports by industries between 2016/17 and 2021/22 in the Canberra Region were for:

  • Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (+$209 million)
  • Electricity, Gas, Water and Waste Services (+$181 million)
  • Wholesale Trade (+$160 million)
  • Administrative and Support Services (+$139 million)
