Dominant groups

An analysis of the total imports by industry sectors in the Canberra Region in 2018/19 shows the three largest industries were:

  • Manufacturing ($4,737 million or 31.6%)
  • Financial and Insurance Services ($1,859 million or 12.4%)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance ($1,329 million or 8.9%)

In combination these three industries accounted for $7,926 million in total or 52.8% of the total imports by industry in the the Canberra Region.

In comparison, the same 3 industries in NSW accounted for 31.8% in Manufacturing; 10.0% in Financial and Insurance Services and 5.5% in Health Care and Social Assistance.

The major differences between total imports by industries of the Canberra Region and NSW were:

  • A larger percentage of total imports by Health Care and Social Assistance (8.9% compared to 5.5%)
  • A larger percentage of total imports by Financial and Insurance Services (12.4% compared to 10.0%)
  • A smaller percentage of total imports by Transport, Postal and Warehousing (5.2% compared to 7.2%)
  • A smaller percentage of total imports by Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (2.0% compared to 4.0%)

The total total imports by industry in the Canberra Region increased by $1,845 million between 2014/15 and 2019/20.

The largest changes in the total imports by industries between 2014/15 and 2019/20 in the Canberra Region were for:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+$545 million)
  • Manufacturing (+$361 million)
  • Financial and Insurance Services (+$321 million)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+$150 million)
