Dominant groups

An analysis of the total imports by industry sectors in the Canberra Region in 2021/22 shows the three largest industries were:

  • Manufacturing ($5,148 million or 32.2%)
  • Financial and Insurance Services ($2,020 million or 12.6%)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance ($1,293 million or 8.1%)

In combination these three industries accounted for $8,461 million in total or 52.9% of the total imports by industry in the the Canberra Region.

In comparison, the same 3 industries in NSW accounted for 33.6% in Manufacturing; 9.6% in Financial and Insurance Services and 4.9% in Health Care and Social Assistance.

The major differences between total imports by industries of the Canberra Region and NSW were:

  • A larger percentage of total imports by Health Care and Social Assistance (8.1% compared to 4.9%)
  • A smaller percentage of total imports by Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (1.9% compared to 5.0%)
  • A larger percentage of total imports by Financial and Insurance Services (12.6% compared to 9.6%)
  • A smaller percentage of total imports by Mining (3.3% compared to 5.1%)

Emerging groups

The total total imports by industry in the Canberra Region increased by $2,259 million between 2016/17 and 2021/22.

The largest changes in the total imports by industries between 2016/17 and 2021/22 in the Canberra Region were for:

  • Manufacturing (+$931 million)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+$448 million)
  • Financial and Insurance Services (+$363 million)
  • Retail Trade (+$251 million)
