Dominant groups
An analysis of the total imports by industry sectors in the Canberra Region in 2022/23 shows the three largest industries were:
- Manufacturing ($5,994 million or 32.1%)
- Financial and Insurance Services ($2,060 million or 11.0%)
- Health Care and Social Assistance ($1,380 million or 7.4%)
In combination these three industries accounted for $9,433 million in total or 50.5% of the total imports by industry in the the Canberra Region.
In comparison, the same 3 industries in NSW accounted for 31.7% in Manufacturing; 8.2% in Financial and Insurance Services and 4.3% in Health Care and Social Assistance.
The major differences between total imports by industries of the Canberra Region and NSW were:
- A smaller percentage of total imports by Mining (4.1% compared to 8.3%)
- A larger percentage of total imports by Health Care and Social Assistance (7.4% compared to 4.3%)
- A larger percentage of total imports by Financial and Insurance Services (11.0% compared to 8.2%)
- A smaller percentage of total imports by Transport, Postal and Warehousing (6.5% compared to 8.3%)

The largest changes in the total imports by industries between 2016/17 and 2022/23 in the Canberra Region were for:
- Manufacturing (+$1,294 million)
- Transport, Postal and Warehousing (+$439 million)
- Financial and Insurance Services (+$374 million)
- Health Care and Social Assistance (+$355 million)
