In the Canberra Region, Manufacturing had the largest total imports by industry, generating $7,368 million in 2022/23.

Imports by industry are sales of goods and services from industries located outside the Canberra Region Plains boundaries to resident households, businesses and other organisations within the area. Imports (domestic) includes all imports from other parts of Australia to the Region.Imports (international) includes the value of all imports to the area from outside Australia.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the total imports by industry sectors in the Canberra Region in 2022/23 shows the three largest industries were:

  • Manufacturing ($7,368 million or 33.2%)
  • Financial and Insurance Services ($2,481 million or 11.2%)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance ($1,461 million or 6.6%)

In combination these three industries accounted for $11,310 million in total or 50.9% of the total imports by industry in the the Canberra Region.

In comparison, the same 3 industries in NSW accounted for 31.7% in Manufacturing; 8.2% in Financial and Insurance Services and 4.3% in Health Care and Social Assistance.

The major differences between total imports by industries of the Canberra Region and NSW were:

  • A smaller percentage of total imports by Mining (4.3% compared to 8.3%)
  • A larger percentage of total imports by Financial and Insurance Services (11.2% compared to 8.2%)
  • A larger percentage of total imports by Health Care and Social Assistance (6.6% compared to 4.3%)
  • A smaller percentage of total imports by Transport, Postal and Warehousing (6.4% compared to 8.3%)

The total total imports by industry in the Canberra Region increased by $2,819 million between 2017/18 and 2022/23.

The largest changes in the total imports by industries between 2017/18 and 2022/23 in the Canberra Region were for:

  • Manufacturing (+$1,127 million)
  • Transport, Postal and Warehousing (+$415 million)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+$359 million)
  • Public Administration and Safety (+$323 million)
