In the Northern Rivers Region, Manufacturing had the largest total imports by industry, generating $4,990 million in 2022/23.

Imports (domestic) includes all imports from other parts of Australia to the Region.Imports (international) includes the value of all imports to the area from outside Australia.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the total imports by industry sectors in the Northern Rivers Region in 2022/23 shows the three largest industries were:

  • Manufacturing ($4,990 million or 33.9%)
  • Financial and Insurance Services ($1,625 million or 11.0%)
  • Public Administration and Safety ($1,125 million or 7.6%)

In combination these three industries accounted for $7,740 million in total or 52.6% of the total imports by industry in the the Northern Rivers Region.

In comparison, the same 3 industries in NSW accounted for 31.7% in Manufacturing; 8.2% in Financial and Insurance Services and 5.6% in Public Administration and Safety.

The major differences between total imports by industries of the Northern Rivers Region and NSW were:

  • A smaller percentage of total imports by Mining (3.4% compared to 8.3%)
  • A larger percentage of total imports by Financial and Insurance Services (11.0% compared to 8.2%)
  • A larger percentage of total imports by Manufacturing (33.9% compared to 31.7%)
  • A larger percentage of total imports by Public Administration and Safety (7.6% compared to 5.6%)

The total total imports by industry in the Northern Rivers Region increased by $1,584 million between 2017/18 and 2022/23.

The largest changes in the total imports by industries between 2017/18 and 2022/23 in the Northern Rivers Region were for:

  • Manufacturing (+$874 million)
  • Public Administration and Safety (+$350 million)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+$260 million)
  • Transport, Postal and Warehousing (+$257 million)
