The Cumberland Council area is located in Sydney's western suburbs. The Council area encompasses a total land area of about 70 square kilometres. The Cumberland Council area is predominantly residential, with substantial industrial areas, and some commercial, institutional and recreational areas.
Key employment sectors in the Cumberland Council area include manufacturing, retail trade, transport postal and warehousing, wholesale trade, construction, health care and education. Industrial areas are located in the suburbs of Auburn, Girraween, Granville, Guildford, Guildford West, Holroyd, Lidcombe, Pemulwuy, Regents Park, Smithfield and Yennora, including Regents Park Industrial Estate and Yennora Distribution Centre. The main retail centres are Auburn Central Shopping Centre, Auburn Arcade Shopping Centre, Primewest Auburn Megamall, the Merrylands CBD, Stockland Merrylands Shopping Centre, Wentworthville Mall, Wentworthville Shopping Plaza and the part of Granville Town Centre which is located in the Cumberland Council area. Smaller retail centres include Coolibah Centre (Merrylands West), Dellwood Shopping Centre (South Granville), Greystanes Shopping Centre, Guildford Shopping Centre, Lidcombe Centre, Oakes Shopping Centre (Westmead), Pendle Hill Shopping Centre, Pemulwuy Marketplace and Portico Plaza Shopping Centre (Toongabbie). Commercial areas are also located along Rawson Street in Auburn, and near the Auburn, Berala, Guildford, Lidcombe, Merrylands and Regents Park railway stations. Health care facilities are provided at the public hospitals of Auburn Hospital and St Joseph’s Hospital (Auburn), and the private hospitals of Holroyd Private Hospital, Westmead Rehabilitation Hospital and Northside Group Wentworthville Clinic. Educational facilities are provided at TAFE NSW South Western Sydney Institute (Granville and Lidcombe Colleges), The University of Sydney (Cumberland Campus) and numerous schools.
