Analysis of the jobs held by the resident workforce in the City of Newcastle in 2021shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (17,726 people or 20.6%)
  • Education and Training (8,814 people or 10.2%)
  • Retail Trade (7,434 people or 8.6%)

In combination these three industries employed 33,974 people in total or 39.5% of the total resident workforce.

In comparison, New South Wales employed 14.4% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 8.7% in Education and Training and 9.0% in Retail Trade.

The major differences between the jobs held by the resident workforce of the City of Newcastle and New South Wales were:

  • A larger percentage of resident workforce employed in Health Care and Social Assistance (20.6% compared to 14.4%)
