In 2021, there were 1,628 people who caught public transport to work (train, bus, tram or ferry) in the City of Newcastle, compared with 61,525 who drove in private vehicles (car – as driver, car – as passenger, motorbike, or truck).

Analysis of the method of travel to work in the City of Newcastle in 2021 compared to the New South Wales workforce within the City of Newcastle shows that 1.5% used public transport, while 55.8% used a private vehicle, compared with 3.9% and 47.5% respectively in New South Wales.
