Output by industry is a gross measure of the total sales of each industry sector in the RDA Murraylands and Riverland region. It does not measure how productive each industry sector is at producing this output - which is measured by value added.
By comparing the output of each industry sector to a regional benchmark, you can clearly see the structure of the RDA Murraylands and Riverland region’s economy. This can be done by directly comparing the percentage contribution of each industry to the total output, relative to the benchmark, or by using a location quotient, where a number greater than one indicates a high concentration of that industry and less than one indicates a lower concentration.

Dominant groups
An analysis of the output by industry sectors in the RDA Murraylands and Riverland region in 2022/23 shows the three largest industries were:
- Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing ($2,508 million or 28.7%)
- Construction ($2,175 million or 24.9%)
- Manufacturing ($938 million or 10.7%)
In combination these three industries accounted for $5,621 million in total or 64.2% of the total output by total industry in the the RDA Murraylands and Riverland region.
In comparison, the same 3 industries in South Australia accounted for 5.9% in Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing; 14.8% in Construction and 11.3% in Manufacturing.
The major differences between output by industries of the RDA Murraylands and Riverland region and South Australia were:
- A larger percentage of output by Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (28.7% compared to 5.9%)
- A larger percentage of output by Construction (24.9% compared to 14.8%)
