Bellingen Shire is located on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales. The Shire encompasses a total land area of about 1,600 square kilometres. Bellingen Shire is a predominantly rural area, with several small townships and villages. The main townships are Bellingen and Urunga, with a smaller township at Dorrigo, and villages at Fernmount, Mylestom, Raleigh and Repton. More than half of the Shire is national parks and state forests. Rural land is used largely for dairy farming, timber production and potato growing. Tourism is also an important industry.

Key employment sectors in Bellingen Shire include health care and social assistance, retail trade, agriculture, forestry and fishing, accommodation and food services (tourism), education and training, and manufacturing. Bellingen Shire features two small public hospitals: Bellinger River District Hospital and Dorrigo Health Campus. The main retail centre in the Shire is the Bellingen Central Business District. The main agricultural industry is dairy farming, followed by potato growing, with timber production and tourism also being important industries. Educational facilities are provided by numerous schools.
