Dominant groups

An analysis of the total exports by industry sectors in Cairns in 2018/19 shows the three largest industries were:

  • Transport, Postal and Warehousing (1,029 million or 21.7%)
  • Accommodation and Food Services (673 million or 14.2%)
  • Manufacturing (667 million or 14.1%)

In combination these three industries accounted for 2,370 million in total or 50.0% of the total exports by industry in the Cairns.

In comparison, the same 3 industries in Queensland accounted for 9.9% in Transport, Postal and Warehousing; 3.3% in Accommodation and Food Services and 15.2% in Manufacturing.

The major differences between the total exports by industries of Cairns and Queensland were:

  • A smaller percentage of total exports by Mining (5.2% compared to 27.1%)
  • A larger percentage of total exports by Transport, Postal and Warehousing (21.7% compared to 9.9%)
