In the Eastern Region, Manufacturing had the largest total imports by industry, generating $16,508 million in 2022/23.

Imports by industry are sales of goods and services from industries located outside the Eastern Region Plains boundaries to resident households, businesses and other organisations within the area. Imports (domestic) includes all imports from other parts of Australia to the Region.Imports (international) includes the value of all imports to the area from outside Australia.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the total imports by industry sectors in the Eastern Region in 2022/23 shows the three largest industries were:

  • Manufacturing ($16,508 million or 33.7%)
  • Transport, Postal and Warehousing ($4,615 million or 9.4%)
  • Public Administration and Safety ($4,096 million or 8.3%)

In combination these three industries accounted for $25,219 million in total or 51.4% of the total imports by industry in the the Eastern Region.

In comparison, the same 3 industries in Victoria accounted for 32.0% in Manufacturing; 8.6% in Transport, Postal and Warehousing and 6.1% in Public Administration and Safety.

The major differences between total imports by industries of the Eastern Region and Victoria were:

  • A larger percentage of total imports by Public Administration and Safety (8.3% compared to 6.1%)
  • A smaller percentage of total imports by Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (4.8% compared to 6.7%)
  • A larger percentage of total imports by Manufacturing (33.7% compared to 32.0%)
  • A smaller percentage of total imports by Financial and Insurance Services (7.1% compared to 8.2%)

Emerging groups

The total total imports by industry in the Eastern Region decreased by $-216 million between 2017/18 and 2022/23.

The largest changes in the total imports by industries between 2017/18 and 2022/23 in the Eastern Region were for:

  • Manufacturing (+$1,668 million)
  • Public Administration and Safety (+$978 million)
  • Transport, Postal and Warehousing (+$617 million)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+$367 million)
