Indigenous Meaning

The original inhabitants of Logan City were the Yugambeh and Jaggera Aboriginal people.

Settlement

European settlement dates from the 1840s when people settled near the Logan and Albert Rivers. Population was minimal until the 1860s, aided by the establishment of the cotton industry, sugar mills and immigration. Land was also used for timber-getting, grazing, crop farming, dairy farming, poultry and beef farming. Growth took place in the 1880s, spurred by the opening of the railway line from Beenleigh to South Brisbane. Expansion continued in the early 1900s. Significant development did not occur until the post-war years, with rapid growth during the 1960s and 1970s, particularly in areas along the Pacific Motorway. Growth continued from the 1980s.
