The City of Stonnington is located in Melbourne's inner south-eastern suburbs. The City encompasses a total area of about 26 square kilometres. The City of Stonnington is a residential and commercial area with some office and institutional land use. Commercial areas include shopping and lifestyle strips along several of the main roads. The City includes some of Melbourne's most prestigious residential localities.

The main retail areas in the City are Chadstone Shopping Centre, the shopping precincts along Chapel Street (Prahran, South Yarra and Windsor), Glenferrie Road (Malvern), Greville Street (Prahran), High Street (Armdale), Malvern Road (Malvern and Toorak) and Toorak Road (South Yarra and Toorak. Smaller retail centres include Jam Factory Shopping Centre, Malvern Central Shopping Centre, Prahran Market, Pran Central Shopping Centre, Tok-H Shopping Centre and Vogue Shopping Plaza. The main health care facility in the City is Cabrini Hospital - Malvern, with smaller health care facilities at Malvern Private Hospital, The Avenue Hospital and The Victoria Clinic. Tertiary educational facilities are provided at Holmesglen Institute of TAFE (Chadstone Campus) and Melbourne Polytechnic (Prahran Campus). The City is home to numerous private schools, including Caulfield Grammar School, De La Salle College, Geelong Grammar School, Korowa Anglican Girls School, Lauriston Girls School, Loreto Mandeville Hall, Melbourne Girls Grammar, Presentation College Windsor, Sacre Coeur Catholic Girls School, St Catherine's School, St Kevin's College and The King David School. Melbourne High School is also located in the City, along with numerous other primary and secondary schools.
