In the Northern Tasmania Region, Manufacturing had the largest total imports by industry, generating $1,934 million in 2016/17.
Imports by industry are sales of goods and services from industries located outside the Northern Tasmania Region boundaries to resident households, businesses and other organisations within the area. Imports (domestic) includes all imports from other parts of Australia to the Region.Imports (international) includes the value of all imports to the area from outside Australia.

An analysis of the total imports by industry sectors in Northern Tasmania Region in 2016/17 shows the three largest industries were:
- Manufacturing ($1,934 million or 30.6%)
- Mining ($481 million or 7.6%)
- Financial and Insurance Services ($462 million or 7.3%)
In combination these three industries accounted for $2,877 million in total or 45.5% of the total imports by total industry in the Northern Tasmania Region.
In comparison, the same 3 industries in Tasmania accounted for 29.3% in Manufacturing; 5.9% in Mining; and 7.7% in Financial and Insurance Services.
The major differences between total imports by industries in the Northern Tasmania Region and Tasmania were:
- A larger percentage of total imports by Mining (7.6% compared to 5.9%)
- A larger percentage of total imports by Manufacturing (30.6% compared to 29.3%)
- A smaller percentage of total imports by Transport, Postal and Warehousing (4.9% compared to 6.0%)
- A smaller percentage of total imports by Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (2.5% compared to 3.5%)
The total imports by industries in the Northern Tasmania Region increased by $152.1 million between 2011/12 and 2016/17.
The largest changes in the total imports by industries between 2011/12 and 2016/17 in the Northern Tasmania Region were for:
- Manufacturing (-$135 million)
- Wholesale Trade (+$92 million)
- Administrative and Support Services (+$68 million)
- Financial and Insurance Services (+$60 million)
