In the Northern Tasmania Region, Manufacturing had the largest total imports by industry, generating $2,310 million in 2017/18.
Imports by industry are sales of goods and services from industries located outside the Northern Tasmania Region boundaries to resident households, businesses and other organisations within the area. An analysis of the total imports by industry sectors in Northern Tasmania Region in 2017/18 shows the three largest industries were:
- Manufacturing ($2,310 million or 32.3%)
- Financial and Insurance Services ($592 million or 8.3%)
- Health Care and Social Assistance ($480 million or 6.7%)
In combination these three industries accounted for $3,382 million in total or 47.3% of the total imports by total industry in the Northern Tasmania Region.
In comparison, the same 3 industries in Tasmania accounted for 32.1% in Manufacturing; 8.1% in Financial and Insurance Services; and 6.8% in Health Care and Social Assistance.
The major differences between total imports by industries in the Northern Tasmania Region and Tasmania were:
- A smaller percentage of total imports by Transport, Postal and Warehousing (4.5% compared to 5.7%)
- A smaller percentage of total imports by Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (1.6% compared to 2.7%)
The total imports by industries in the Northern Tasmania Region increased by $1,079.4 million between 2012/13 and 2017/18.
The largest changes in the total imports by industries between 2012/13 and 2017/18 in the Northern Tasmania Region were for:
- Manufacturing (+$383 million)
- Financial and Insurance Services (+$159 million)
- Health Care and Social Assistance (+$131 million)
- Wholesale Trade (+$121 million)
