Total industries employs more of the Northern Tasmania Region's resident workforce than any other industry sector.

Industry sector data identifies the industries in which the residents of an area work either within the residing area or elsewhere. Dominant groups

Analysis of the jobs held by the resident workforce in the Northern Tasmania Region in 2021shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (11,777 people or 17.3%)
  • Retail Trade (6,859 people or 10.1%)
  • Education and Training (5,967 people or 8.8%)

In combination these three industries employed 24,603 people in total or 36.1% of the total resident workforce.

In comparison, Tasmania employed 16.4% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 9.6% in Retail Trade and 9.4% in Education and Training.

The major differences between the jobs held by the resident workforce of the Northern Tasmania Region and Tasmania were:

  • A smaller percentage of resident workforce employed in Public Administration and Safety (4.8% compared to 7.3%)
  • A larger percentage of resident workforce employed in Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (6.6% compared to 5.3%)
  • A larger percentage of resident workforce employed in Health Care and Social Assistance (17.3% compared to 16.4%)
  • A smaller percentage of resident workforce employed in Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (4.2% compared to 5.1%)

Emerging groups

The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident workforce between 2016 and 2021 in the Northern Tasmania Region were for those employed in:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+3,199 resident workforce)
  • Construction (+1,362 resident workforce)
  • Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (+834 resident workforce)
  • Accommodation and Food Services (+740 resident workforce)
